Beef manufacturers strike back

As more and more stores continue to say they will no longer buy finely textured beef  – which has been dubbed “pink slime” by activists – the beef industry is striking back, saying the filler is not bad for customers an eliminates waste.

The American Meat Institute sent out a recent press release saying calling lean finely textured beef “pink slime” is “is inaccurate, alarmist and disparaging.”

“LFTB is not consumed by itself, but rather is a component of some ground beef at levels of approximately 10 to 15 percent.  LFTB also is nutritionally equivalent to ground beef and regulated and inspected by USDA.  USDA buys ground beef with LFTB for the school lunch program and limits it to15 percent of ground beef products.  Food safety experts, consumer representatives and government officials including Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack all affirm its safety and nutrition.”

Three governors – Rick Perry of Texas, Sam Brownback of Kansas and Terry Branstad of Iowa - recently toured a plants that make finely textured beef in an effort to bring awareness to the importance the product has on the economy and in nutrition:

“It’s beef, but it’s leaner beef which is better for you,” Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad said. “We take this off the market then we end up with a fatter product that’s going to cost more and is going to increase the obesity problem in this country.”

What do you think of the product?
